They Held Such Promise . . . some thoughts on the League of the South

This past Monday we had our monthly meeting of Free Florida First. My presentation to our little group was entitled: “Some Insights on the Southern Movement: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

I suppose that I was in a bit of a funk, as I had been reflecting upon the present status of an organization with which we had once identified -- an organization for which we had once held great hopes.

Unfortunately, the League of the South has of recent years become associated with, and composed of, folks that we have very little in common with. We certainly do not believe that they represent the culture, or the civilization, or the faith of the Old South. They seem more to be advocating something like a New Reich.

While I went into some detail on Monday night, I can only share a couple of examples here; I think they should suffice:

1. One individual, who had been stricken from the League’s membership in 2013 because of his association with neo-Nazis, was subsequently returned to its rolls. I’m not sure of his present membership status. In any case, he also formed his own organization called the Traditionalist Worker Party. If that name is not off-putting enough, you may find a Youtube video of Mr. Matthew Heimbach extolling the virtues of National Socialism; it was published in February of 2017.

National Socialism is most often known by its nickname of Nazism. That the League of the South now embraces or at least associates with Nazism (National Socialism) can be shown by noting the Mr. Heimbach was a featured speaker at the recent Florida League of the South Conference in May 2017. Dr. Michael Hill, National President of the League of the South, also addressed that conference and complimented Heimbach on his address.

2. In April of this year, the League of the South had a contingent at a street demonstration in Pikeville, Kentucky. The event, which seemed orchestrated, featured Antifa thugs on one side of the police line and the League of the South, the Nazis, and the KKK on the other – shouting expletives and chanting slogans towards one another. Below is a picture of Isaac Shelby Baker with one of his fellow protestors. Mr. Baker is purported to be the Commander of the League’s “Southern Defense Force” in Kentucky. When he posted this picture to his own Facebook account he commented: “This should make some heads explode. My care factor: Zero.”

And here is a picture that Dr. Hill posted with his friend “Ike” on the National League website.

3. The Keynote Speaker for the League of the South’s National Conference, held in June of 2017, was none other than Mr. David Duke of KKK and Nazi fame. His reputation precedes him, so I’ll say no more.

4. I could add example upon example, including dealings with current League members, revealing not only their political inclinations and associations, but also their filthy and vile communications.

I don’t see how the League could be upset with the publication of these facts; they are out there loudly and proudly advocating them on a daily basis. I’m just thankful that we have had no association with the League for several years now. If I had been more perceptive and smarter, we would have been gone much sooner.

Here’s what I see as a bottom-line. We at Free Florida First (and several other pro-Confederate and pro-secessionist organizations of which I am aware) advocate for increased liberty and individual freedom. The League and their associates are advocating an agenda that will require a BIGGER and STRONGER government . . . one which they hope to sit atop.

I suppose that I can take some solace in the fact that many honorable men have the left the League over the years -- some before us, some after us. Again, I should have seen the writing on the wall sooner, but I did not know the true Michael Hill as well as many of these other more prominent men did. To my knowledge, none of the original founders would still identify themselves with the League and its new agenda.

How things got to this point, I really don’t know. I never was privy to all the inner workings. I thought that the original League had almost limitless potential for good. Unfortunately, that potential was never realized and it has come to naught – or worse.

What troubles me most is that some men -- men that I still want to count as honorable and as friends -- continue to have at least a nominal association with the League. I can only hope that it is because they have not been paying close attention to what has happened. I would implore them to open their eyes.

I suppose that I may feel compelled take this up again in the future, but sincerely hope that this will suffice. I don’t want to make a career of attacking the League or of establishing WHO WE ARE NOT. I did, however, believe that these brief words were necessary at this time.

When we first left the League I could say that we bore them no ill will. I’m not sure I can honestly say that any longer. I see very little that can be considered as a positive any longer. I would leave them with this blessing: “May you return to your pro-Liberty, Christian, and Southern roots.” Unfortunately, I have no expectation of seeing that come to pass.

  1. You know nothing of National Socialism. You (apparently) know nothing of the South either. If you think your sissy handed approach of disavowing "racism" is going to get you anywhere you're sadly mistaken. The League continues to grow while petty little groups like yours sit in irrelevance. You will continue to be considered an ignorant racist nazi bigot just like us as long as you advocate secession and fly the Confederate flag.

Btw groups like Antifa call the Confederates "Proto-Nazis" for a reason...

    1. So courageous, "Anonymous". When I publish, I publish under my own name. I don't look to gain any points with the wackos on the left or on the right. I fully expect to be called a racist and whatever new names the League and its fellow travelers can manufacture. I care not one whit. The South, the true South, is about LIBERTY, something the Nazis and their ilk know nothing about.

  2. I care not at all that some consider me a racist. I care not at all that those in the League call me "Rainbow Conservative" or "Crypt Keeper of the Confederacy" or "Cuckfederate" or whatever new and juvenile insult you can invent. I never backed down on flying my Confederate Flag. It was the League that came up with their own Black "X" flag and stepped back from the flags of my fathers. I don't need no stikin' new flag. And Mr. Hines . . . you "can say, with authority"??? You have NO AUTHORITY here and I'm not interested in what your opinion is of my relationship with my Lord.

I appreciate the comments. I know that once the insults and name-calling starts, I have prevailed.

    1. You're prevailed only within the tortured wasteland of your own fevered mind, sir. If I had the capacity to pity the pathetic, I'd be overwhelmed with that sentiment toward you. Alas, I have only disgust and contempt for such a deracinated weakling.

    2. Thank you, Hiram, you will never know how encouraging your words are to me.

    3. And yours to me, sir. The scorn of you and your ilk tells me I'm doing this right.

    4. Thank you again, Mr. Burgess. In the words of Kurt Hofmann: "It is better to be despised by the despicable than admired by the admirable."

    5. Isn't it interesting that you bring the very same to my mind, you foul, reconstructed, misguided fool?

  3. "Mr. David Duke of KKK and Nazi fame. His reputation precedes him, so I’ll say no more." You sound just like the rest of the globalist shills. Coward.

    1. Ryan, you call me "coward" and yet many of your League comrades are posting anonymously. It matters not to me. I do know the Lord and there's no comparison with Mr. Duke. I can assure you, if I cared for the praise of men, I would not be where I am today.

  5. I ask this: What's your alternative? I see you attacking the main Southern organization that's energized and actually doing anything.

    1. I believe that small, local, self-supporting groups are what are primarily necessary. But I don't disparage doing other things. I do discourage doing evil and stupid things for the sake of just doing something. I can see what the League has become. I simply cannot associate with such. I wish the League's trajectory had been different. I sincerely do. Others may be charged with being useless, but there is such a thing as being worse than useless.

    2. "there is such a thing as being worse than useless." Indeed there is, and sir you personify that statement.

  6. I've thought for awhile about posting this, and decided to go ahead. Even though I haven't been active in the LoS for well over a decade, I thought my perspective might possibly be useful to both sides of this argument. (Or maybe not. Feel free to ignore if you choose.)

I was there in the first years of the LoS. I traveled to my state conferences (Missouri). Back in the 90's I was the webmaster ("rebmaster" - a term I still hold dear and used as my email address to this day) for our state LoS webpage. I was appointed as the SW Missouri regional representative for years. I met Dr. Hill and many others of the early League leadership. (I say these things not to boast, but merely to establish my background.)

Unfortunately, I eventually became totally burnt out, dismayed at the lack of meaningful progress and other reasons (not having to do with the recent direction of the LoS). And even though I followed the online publications and Facebook page and such, my perspective is still much of an outsider at this point, and is presented as such. I don't claim to know the LoS leadership personally, and certainly don't claim to know their motivations. With that disclaimer out of the way, I'll continue...

I never agreed with the strategy of adopting the white flag with the black X, but didn't oppose it either, figuring (hoping) perhaps someone wiser than I knew something I didn't. I remember when, years earlier, Dr. Hill carried the LoS when no one else was even willing, and even though I am wary of "long-term leaders" in any positions, I admired (and still do) his stubborn will and determination. This is part why I don't easily criticize his actions as LoS President. (Again, there may be plenty of other reasons for concern I don't know about, but I admit I'm speaking as an interested outside observer.)

I do very much want to point out one thing that others may not know, or have forgotten: Dr. Hill was an established professor for a great many years at a predominately black college. The insults, abuse, and entirely unfair attacks that he and his family were subjected to were extreme, to say the least. I certainly would caution anyone attacking him to metaphorically walk in his shoes as much as possible, and reconsider. I can absolutely understand the concept of "blowback" - if you are attacked and called a "racist" with such vigor for so many years, why wouldn't you eventually think something akin to: "OK, if that's what you want, that's what you'll get." A thoughtful person cannot endure such abuse forever without absorbing it to some degree - I've been called all kinds of such things for two decades for my unswerving support of our Southron heritage and rights. So I know firsthand how it can impact even though most hardened soul (and I assure you my soul is well tempered by fire and ice). And still I can only glimpse at what Dr. Hill (and the other long-time supporters of the LoS) have endured.

(I've reached the limit of comment length, so this is to be continued in next post.)

  7. (Continued from previous post due to length restrictions.)

Even though I don't personally agree with the direction of the LoS throughout the years (not just recently), I would advise everyone to consider these words:

The enemy of my enemy should be my friend.

I often considered the SCV and the LoS to be akin to our Irish brethern in Sinn Fein and the IRA. Both are necessary, both have a unique purpose. The SCV (and other, similar groups such as Free Flordia First) can distance themselves from the "radical" LoS, as Sinn Fein did with a wink and a nod to the IRA. Nothing wrong with a multi-pronged approach to any battle, if you study the Art of War.

And this is a war for our culture - indeed our continued existence - in case any of y'all haven't noticed. (Especially this past year!) It has been a cold war for most of the past 150 years, but it's heating back up to a boil - whether we wanted it or our not is irrelevant. It's time to start thinking strategically.

So FAR be it from to attempt to be the "peacemaker" or "voice of reason" in this case, but let me respectfully suggest that both sides of this discussion need to be a lot smarter than our enemies (which are legion, and some not as stupid as we would like to think). There's still an opportunity to persevere... Though it shrinks smaller with every passing generation. Clever action - even "unconventional" action - is likely necessary at this point. I may have issues with each and every group I've encountered, but I continue to pray for the best outcome no matter what.

    God Save The South.

    1. Bruce, I cannot imagine that we have not met in the past. I too have previously served in various capacity in the League, including state webmaster and chairman of a regional chapter. I was presented the R. E. Lee award at a national conference several years ago. These new comers that charge me with not knowing anything about the League show their ignorance.

Seldom does the philosophy of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" work out. Just look at the past and recent foreign policy of the Amerikan Empire. Just what sort of future does the League envision, along with their National SOCIALIST allies?

I suppose you may describe the League's latest actions as "clever", and I suppose they may well be, but many other adjectives come to mind first.
